Put the cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar and cream in a small heavy pan. Bring slowly to the boil, then put to one side to cool.

Put the mascarpone in a large bowl and beat until smooth. Stir in the custard and the cooled spiced cream. Pour the mixture into a shallow freezer container, and freeze for 2 1⁄2 hours.

Beat to break up the ice crystals, and freeze for a further 2 1⁄2 hours before serving.
